Alternate Dimensioning Scheme

Alternate Dimensioning Scheme

Good morning ProE people-

I am in the process of creating a drawing of a top level assembly that will
detail all of the customer interfaces. Most of the dimensions that I
require for this assembly drawing are not modeled in the parts as the
design/manufacturing intent of the parts does not necessarily reflect the
dimensioning scheme that is required at the assembly level.

The question is, what is the best way to create the alternate dimensioning
scheme in ProE? From what I can see I have two options: create the
dimensions on the drawing or create them as reference dimensions in the
model and show them on the drawing. I am not too excited about option
number one because I have worked many places with strict ploicies against
created dimensions and I have seen instances where they were applied
incorrectly resulting in bogus dimension values.

I have used option two many times in the past. My preference is to use the
sketched datum point feature to create the dimensions as it only requires
the creation of a datum point and I can create most any dimension that I
need within the sketch plane. The problem that I am having is that some of
the views that I need to create dimensions for are cross sections and, in
the sketcher, Pro won't allow me to reference the edges created by the
section. I see that in the references dialog box there is an option for
x-section selection but I can't get this to do anything for me.

I have also tried creating a datum curve through the section but Pro won't
allow me to reference this curve in the sketcher either.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Erik

Erik,

I've used primarily created dims in all my drawings for years with no
issues with bogus values. Yes, you can use the override notation to
enter in whatever value you want, but if you are not doing that your
drawing dims will be accurate.

To me, even if you have a strict "model dims only" mindset, this is a
good and appropriate place to use created dims.
