Common Name is used primarily in Windchill (where it is called "name"
confusingly). It allows you to use punctuation, spaces, capitalisation
etc to give the part/asm/drawing a more descriptive title. You can access
it in drawing title blocks (or any other notes) using &PTC_COMMON_NAME:D
(this will display the common name of the drawing, drop the 😄 to display
the common name of the active part.

cheers

See either of these doc’s.
It’s horrible that this confusing situation still exists.

Useful only with Windchill really

The basic idea is name=number in Windchill and common name=name in Windchill
