Component reuse

Component reuse

When we are creating a large assembly structure using AFX, the designers are not reusing a frame component, even if it is the same size. They do the same thing with pipes. In some of the larger assemblies we may have 20-30 unique components instead of 1 component placed 20 or 30 times in different locations. Some of these are patterns but most or unique placements.

The question is: Does reusing the same component instead of unique components make the file size smaller and thus speed up regeneration times?

I loaded in Creo one of the top level assemblies this morning and it took about an hour into a clean workspace to open the drawing.

If I can get some numbers to show that component reuse will save regeneration time, then I can try to convince the designers to change their habits...maybe.

Each unique component will be loaded into memory and will regen as required. So 20 versions with unique names that contain an identical set of features and geometry will certainly take longer to load and regen than one model placed 20x in an assembly.

I think the affect on the assembly file size would be negligible but I am not positive on that.
