Creating Closed Volume from Seed / Boundary Surface

Creating Closed Volume from Seed / Boundary Surface

I created a surface copy using the seed / boundary surface technique. I
want to solidify it, but it needs to be a closed volume. What's the
easiest way to "cap" the ends that were created by the edges of the
boundary surfaces?

Note: Creating fills, extrudes, revolves, seems a bit tedious.

My system admin asked:

"Any chance we could get away with the nVidia Quadro 2000 instead of the
4000? Let me know."

I don't want to "cheap out" on the tools I use daily. But do I really
need it? He thinks there is $400 difference between the 2000 & 4000.
Thanks.

A lot will depend on what you do with WF.
If you only make boxes and tubes and a drawing, the 2000 will be more than adequate.
If you do complex surface shapes and assemblies of 10K+ components, the 4000 may not be enough.

Our new Dell R5800 with FX100 head running win7-64 has a 5000 in it, very nice machine.

I guess it all depends on what your doing with it, but for me, I just need
to look at the specs... (see attached)
More Cuda Cores, twice the memory and bandwidth...
What's $400 compared to 3-5 years of user comfort and speed over the life of
a machine?

Perhaps Olaf's benchmarks will provide you better data to make your decision.

Hi Tom,
If I step to one side one the exact capabilities of each card I can ask the
question; does my employer value me?

What I mean by this is you are having a discussion over $400 when this is
probably less than 1% of your annual salary so how does your employer see
your value? Obviously no-one wants to pay over the odds for anything, and
CAD equipment is no exception, but long gone are the days when a new
workstation was around half your salary; this is now in the order of 5%, or
10% tops, so it makes no sense for companies to scrimp on what they provide
even if you only think of this in terms of motivation. Of course this does
not mean the sky is the limit and when I look at specifying new machines I
do keep an eye on the price and try to balance value against performance.

I suspect though that either card will serve your purpose unless you are an
outlier with massive assemblies as suggested by another reply.

All that said I am looking at Dell M6600 with the NVIDIA 3000M card as this
is already a giant step up on the FX1400M in our M6300 machines that are two
and a half years old 🙂

Yes, and lets put some numbers to this? IF we assume a $50,000/year salary, a workstation that cost $5000, and has a "life" of 2 years... That's 5000/(2*50000) = 5%.... NOW add in the building, benefits, support staff (accounting, HR, managers, sales...) AND consider that most likely you're on your workstation somewhere between 90-100% of the time; and that 5% is further reduced...

IT is pissing over $400... sad... sad... sad... "Any chance we could get away with..." NOT having idiots in IT??? 😉 Talk about penny wise and dollar foolish...

OH, and note that I think $50k/yr is pretty darn low, at least for a degreed design engineer... AND a $5000 workstation is incredibly HIGH... We're running HP z600's with FX4000, 12 gig ram that I think run around half that, though we lease them for business reasons...

Thanks...
