I currently have assembly and part files in the Pro-E default template. How can I change the default template of these with out creating a new model?

If you make reference to the units, you can change going to this path: With the part or assmbly opened File/Properties/and go to the change link in Unit row/select what template want and clic on set button, proe are be able to convert or interpret the change.

Objects that is loaded as standard templates can be redefined by ModelCHECK. Program checks such as relations, parameters, layers, model names, etc..
ModelCHECK started when you turn the following configuration options: modelcheck_enabled yes.

More information about ModelCHECK: http://communities.ptc.com/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/1342-102-1-1279/Implementing_ModelCHECK.pdf
