How to make a normal extrusion to a curved surface?

I am trying to make a "W" like extrusion onto the curved part of a cylinder. I would know how to do this if I needed to cut straight into the cylinder, but the "W" needs to be normal to the curved surface as a pin connected to a rotating inner rod will use the "W" as a guide. No matter what order I use the wrap, offset, planar sketch techniques it always ends up going straight into the cylinder and not normal to it. So any tips on making it normal to the curve? I am assuming I have to start with the sketch on a datum like so...

Maybe something like this would be more accurate to start with.

If you mean the pin will follow the W and you want maximum bearing surface, I think that will be a LOT more work. I drew it flat and wrapped it just fooling around, and the geometry of the W on the OD is a lot different then the ID.

But if that's not what you mean, then I mis-understood the goal.

Hmm okay, that is what I meant but I thought I would be able to produce something so the pin would have the same contact on the inside and outside. Ill give that method a shot for now though. thanks

It still has the same contact surface since the cut is perpendicular to the curve.

try to project curve or make surface inside and extrude to that surface
