IMPORTANT EMN/EMP Issues from Xpedition and Special Characters

Our company is in the process of migrating from Mentor PADS to Mentor Xpedition. We are now noticing that, unlike PADs which converts special characters to an underscore, Xpedition leaves in all special characters in their EMN/EMP files. This is a huge issue for us.

We do use a mapping hint file for all of our library models, but the problem is for all models not in our 3d library. We only create library models that are important for the Mechanical engineer, who requires more than a simplified 'block' from the EMP.

However, with Xpedition EMN/EMP files, Creo does not auto-create any simplified block with any special characters (periods, plus signs, ...). Our boards are coming in with half of the components missing. SOME of these components are tall capacitors or chips that the mechanical engineer needs to look at; even though a library model is not required.

For all of those users who have worked with Xpedition EMN/EMP files:

  • Have you seen this behavior?
  • What have you done to avoid or mitigate this?
  • Do you also use ECAD/MCAD collaboration? Does this also mess up all of the IDX files as well?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! I would have thought Creo would have just been smart enough to auto-convert any special characters to an underscore!

Thank you for your time!
