Okay, I've never seen this one before...

I have a pattern, of a revolved feature, on a round part, (that really
should have been a hole) .. that says it's axial / 36 instances @ 10
degrees.

but some how this engineer deleted/hidden/suppressed instance 7, 19 & 31

I thought it was because he actually added new holes in the same location
as these
instances and it was the little dungeon of hidden axis coming back to haunt
me from
2001. 😄  (I guess maybe it still could be)

but if I suppress  those three holes the space remains.

Now, he didn't GROUP the feature, Pattern it, Un-Pattern and delete the
features,
it's not a Pattern of a pattern
it's not a tabled pattern (which is how I would have done it)

can't find anything on a layer that's turned off

the pattern is still there and it still says I should have 36 features..

so even though this is going away, and I'm going to replace this with
holes, I want to know..

What am I missing?? where did it go??

When you create the pattern, there are little placeholders that are black
circles. When you click on the black circle, it turns white - like a "radio
button". A white circle shuts off that instance of the pattern. Redefine
(excuse me - edit the definition) of the pattern (not the feature under it)
and I will bet there are a few white dots and 33 black dots.



I will be very interested to learn that this is not the case.

Don't feel bad Terry, This is also a new one for me... (and when I read
it, I have the exact same reaction... 😉

In the cosmetic surfacing world that I am in, I rarely use patterns, but
like you, I don't ever remember seeing that functionality.
Just another reason why I like to stay in tune with this group. You never
know when your gonna learn something new.

Yeah… it appeared in one of the Wildfires. Can’t remember whether it was in from WF1/2, or whether it was new in WF4 (we went 2000i^2 -> WF2 -> WF4).



I use it with caution, as I’m never quite sure what it would do if I reduced the number of items in the pattern such that one of the ‘suppressed’ items no longer existed – most of my patterns are equispaced around a circle.

It started in WF3.0 – one of the reason we migrated to that release along with patterns of patterns. It’s a very useful tool, we use it to apply underlying texture and then just omit the ones that interfere with the graphics. Just remember that you can’t hide the first instance! No need for caution – it’s one of ProE’s more stable tools. Love it with “Fill” patterns.

We use this "trick" extensively when perforating sheet metal in selected areas. The fill option works very fast IF you can make your pattern Identical (with no intersection with outher cuts). Sometime excluding 1 or a few holes in the fill pattern makes a big difference in regeneration time, but more importantly in a "clean" part from manufacturing.

And, Jonathan is justified in worrying about changing the pattern – if you use this functionality, you should always redefine (edit definition) the pattern to implement any changes and not just modify (edit) the values. The location of the omitted instances will change if you edit the number of instances – probably predictably, but I have not taken the time to learn how. I don’t use it enough… But I sure am grateful for it when I do. And I have not seen anything weird about it either; like Richard said, it is a pretty stable tool.

I can see it being very useful with FILL .. but I still have issues with
leaving it,
especially since I just found another drawing with the same pattern of
OMITTED HOLES and the person who documented the drawing (someone else's
model) didn't notice and listed the quantity as 36 on the hole dims and the
angle.. .. when it is actually 33 on the hole and the angle isn't 36X 10°
because that only applies in 33 instances but not in a row .. there are 3
groups of 11X 10° and the other
three holes were dimensioned 3X 120°
