Regeneration Question

Regeneration Question

I have a model of a stamping die.  it is fairly big - around 2500 features and ~100MB in size.  Regeneration takes a while - around 25 seconds.  It is driving me crazy that anything new added at the end of the model tree (for example a new datum plane) causes the regeneration of all 2500 features.    I am not used to this as typically the system only regenerates the features that are needed.

I wonder I suppose it doesn't help that this model has the "need regeneration" icon that won't go away -

so maybe I have to solve that issue.  Just checking if there some model-specific setting that can affect this behavior?

(using Creo 4)

2500 features are excessive (unless they are pattern members) even in the context of modern desktop computing power. I have to deal with this with client data sets every so often. When I do not want to chase down the root cause I try to use the read only functionality where possible. Can you set upstream groups of features to read only and still work on the model?

It is more than likely dependencies within the feature history of the model. I have seen merge/inheritance induce this in some cases and I suppose other external refs could in theory cause this. Check the reference viewer and if there are external refs, if so make sure they are not set to regenerate automatically and see if the behavior changes.

If there are no external refs then that would point me toward the feature history within the model. Analysis features set to regen always could also be suspect for this.

Thanks for the insights.  No resolution yet.  As I open this model, this message keeps popping up:

Editing the definition of feature ID #3750936 does not reveal any issues.

Hi,

I asked Google ... creo ERR: internal datum is unattached from feat

It seems to me that the best way how to resolve the problem is open Case at PTC Support, send them your model and ask them to explain the problem.

Hi,

try following procedure:

  • start Creo
  • open model
  • regenerate model
  • exit Creo
  • open trail file related to Creo session in Notepad and read it carefully ... I hope you find information explaining Creo's behavior

If you have patterns make sure that they are not general patterns if the patterning type allows for you to pick one of the other options.

Consider making patterns geometry patterns.

If the features are set in stone, consider using the collapse geometry function which will turn those features into step model like independent geometry. You will not longer be able to natively edit the features but you can still use flexible modeling to edit them.
