Saving as OBJ

Saving as OBJ

I've read several posts on saving as an OBJ file but they don't quite address my issue(s).  I'm on Creo 9.

1. Saving as an OBJ only seems to work on an assembly and not a single component level.  I will try to open a single part of an assembly and save out as an OBJ but then nothing happens and I don't even get settings options.

2. When work in the assembly and try to save out, I do get the settings and menu for adding parts but while I can select individual parts to add to the menu, nothing happens and they do not add.  The only way to save an OBJ as I can find is to select "ALL" and then select the coordinate system which takes everything instead of letting me choose.

Does anyone else have this issue?  Thank you!

When I try to save a part as an OBJ (Wavefront), I get a prompt to select a UCS and then the options box appears.

This was it.  I had to run some various tests on this between the two programs I'm using (Creo and Blender).  It's just not an intuitive process.

So, to select a single item, I have to press ADD, then the part in the assembly, and then also click a reference like a datum or a coordinate system for that part.  Wash, rinse, repeat for each item.  If I click the initial coordinate system for the whole assembly, this also lets me import new parts into my active Blender assembly at the exact same assembly position.  I think I've got it now.  Thank you!

I'm using Creo 9.0.9.0.

As far as I can see, I'm able to export Wavefront files fine. The result of outputting a single part file is a .obj file and an accompanying .mtl file. Presumably one is the geometry and the other is the "material" file?

There is an option in the config.pro that apply to Wavefront.

export_profiles_wavefront

This implies that it is possible to have profiles files that tell Creo how you want to output such files. Perhaps you somehow have this set and have a profile file that is preventing you from doing what you want. I don't know what might be causing this dilemma, but maybe if you generate a profile file you can look into it and see what might be the cause.

If you haven't already, it would probably be best to check this out:

https://support.ptc.com/help/creo/creo_pma/r11.0/usascii/index.html#page/data_exchange/interface/About_Creating_Editing_Import_Profiles.html

It's a guess on my part, but there don't seem to be a lot of options when outputting these files.
