I think this is just a side-effect of using dual dimensions. It insists on the "reference dimension" parentheses enclosing both dimensions, so if the [xx.xx] one is wider, that's the one it uses to space the ( ). It would probably be nicer if one could center the primary and secondary dimensions, but that too is denied us.
