Windchill Check-in/Check-Out Causes Pro/E to Hang

Windchill Check-in/Check-Out Causes Pro/E to Hang

I've been having lots of problems with check-in/check-out, resulting in Pro/E hanging to the point that I have to kill the application, delete the wc_cache folder, start Pro/E and register a new wc_cache folder. If I'm doing a lot of check-in/check-out, then I have to do this dance 3 to 5 times per day. I'm using Wildfire 4.0, build code M120, WindchillPDMLink 9.1, datecode M010. My useage model has been both to check-in/check-out from the Pro/E menu as well as from the workspace area. Either method will cause Pro/E to hang. I've been told my IE browser might be suspect. I'm using IE v8.0.6001.18702. I also have Safari on this computer.

Any ideas as to how to improve the reliability? My sys-admin resource here hasn't been able to provide any insight.

Looks like the issue described in TAN 149872.

Try upgrading to WF4 M160+ or disable your Workspace Frames.

Lar,
Take a look at your total cache used vs the amount allocated by the dm_cache_limit, I have noticed several communication issues when you approach the cache limit including SOAP errors, WS hanging, Pro\ENGINEER not responding etc. go to your server manager, cache tools and clear cache. Hope this helps.

While most of our drawings are 3D based we still do a good bit of 2D
when laying out cables or hydraulic hose connection diagrams.

2D In Pro/E has always been painful but in WF4 and before, users could
seamlessly switch between editing 2d geometry elements and

text properties. So if you were moving a line or imported 2D symbol that
contained text and happened to notice that the text was wrong or that a
nearby table needed editing you could just select the item and right
click to edit properties.

In WF5 I find that the new ribbon menu structure requires that I select
"Annotate" if I want to edit text or table contents and "Sketch" to edit
line properties. Right click only offers a "properties" option if the
correct ribbon topic selection is picked.

Is there a config setting to work around this? Why would PTC add more
mouse clicks when for years they have been trying to reduce them?

I checked with PTC Support on this because it's such a bad UI design and
was driving my users crazy.

The answer from PTC is NO. There is no config.pro setting that would
allow you to select what you wish with the mouse regardless of the active
Ribbon.

The only suggestion I can make is to create a mapkey shortcut that will
activate the most used Ribbon tabs.

WF5 is a terrible mess in my opinion.

Now you feel our pain. Told everyone I can to stop @ WF4. WF5 is so inefficient for drawing mode it's not even funny. BTW, you can push the ALT key and then you can pick many items like you used to even if you are not in the "correct ribbon/tab". Sort of a work-around I guess.

That is Microsoft Ribbon Bar standard functionality.
ALT will turn on the short-cut key for the ribbon areas.
Try it any MS Office 2007/2010 app that uses the ribbon bars.

Could this mean that PTC is finally using MFC calls for their menus and leaving the UI basic design to others, just customizing for their own use?
What does the ribbon bar do on a Unix box?

Thank you,

Yeah, I know about the ALT key. It helps but even after you pick an
object you can't edit the properties (Line style, Text value, etc..)
unless the correct ribbon bar is selected. There is a sort of irony in
the fact that drafting has always been the weakest part of the package
and while we have been waiting for years for improvements, it just got
worse.
