automatic regeneration

Is there a way to turn off automatic regeneration of parts and assemblies and have a option to update manually after the file is open?

Albert,
I was taught to create a exclude all simplified rep in the
template, so that you would have the option to open the simplified rep
instead of the master rep, which will prevent the parts from loading in to
memory until you are ready.

How would I exclude simplified reps like you mentioned if a assembly is already created.
