How do I measure the torque output of a gear in Mechanisms?

Hi

First off I have used gear connection as opposed to a cam follower.

I have my output angular velocity but I also need the output Torque and I don't know how to analyse this?

Basically as well as your server motor on the input you need a torque motor on the OUTPUT (not input) or vice versa. You can't have them on the same axis. I was just verifying my gear ratio as opposed to specifically looking for an output torque, so this worked for me.

To actually measure the torque go into Measures->Create New Measure->Type->Connection Reaction then under "Connection" choose your gear axis that you want to measure the torque of, then under "Component" choose "Axial Moment" and thats you ready.

I put a torque of 10 N.mm on the output and got 2 N.mm from the input, conforming my gear ratio of 5:1

Hello Cameron,

in the model shown in the picture, the "output torque" would entirely be used to accelerate. In reality you want to measure the torque that would be necessary to keep the velocity constant. I am no specialist for Mechanism, so I don't know whether it is actually possible, but you probably will need to apply some forces or a design to prevent the mechanism from accelerating.

If your mechanism is idealized (without losses), then it should be easiest to get the torque from a linear equation, as torque multiplied by velocity is constant for gears (minus friction losses) and this task will be reduced to a geometric calculation:

Torque_out = Torque_in * Velocity_in / Velocity_out

Thanks Gunter,

It's not quite what I was looking for, what I didn't say (sorry) was that I was using a server motor which keeps the speed constant and the purpose of this was to find the torque without using hand calculations and only using mechanisms. But I have found the answer which I'll post below.
