How to model for laser marking?

Hi everyone,

What is the recommended procedure for laser marking an injection-molded part? I received some *.BMP files that contact the logo to be laser marked.

Although these BMP files can be imported directly into a 2-D drawing view, the surface of the part is curved. Incidentally, I found a suggested technique for attaching the bitmapped image directly to the part model (http://www.profilesmagazine.com/p29/tips_randazzo.html) which seems to conform to the curved surface. Using the Image Editor, Pro-E can save a Bitmapped file as a Decal (*.tx4). Can the BMP or Decal image be used directly as a reference for laser marking? What do you do if the color image needs to be converted into Black & White (not grayscale)?

I have wondered if the BMP file could be converted into a DXF or DWG file format for importing into the Pro-E sketcher. Can Pro-E do this conversion, or is another software required to do this? If so, is a "free" converter available?

In closing, I would like to know the procedure that works best in creating a logo for laser marking inside Pro-E, and if any additional tools are required (besides Pro-E) for this process. I will summarize if I receive responses to this question.
