Kinematic simulation of escapement mechanism

Hi all ,

 

I have to simulate an Escapement mechanism's kinematics.

I want to know if modeling the mechanism in Creo is even feasible before I start.
It works back and forth ('foliot') and is not only a two-wheel rotation that is impacted by diameter ratios. (Key innovation: the escapement)

I want to know if using a Creo mechanism is even feasible.

Ultimately this needs dynamic simulation because when functioning it is not kinematic. In Creo that is MDO or mechanism dynamics option. I think it comes with the third and higher license levels.

I think Creo can do this mechanism. The key technical challenge is the tooth to pallet contacts.

My first thought is to approximate one tooth section as an extruded tooth and setup a CAM connection to the pallet, then have the CAM connection pattern with the tooth pattern as a pattern feature. (so you don't have to select each one separately)

There are other contact methods but I find CAMs (with liftoff) to be efficient.

The reason to extrude the tooth section is CAMs can't have curvature in two directions. Think of each tooth as made in its own plane rather than curving by the radius of the gear. (pentagon, hexagon..., #teeth-agon)

Another way to do this would be spheres representing the pallets and defining a planar contact for each side of a tooth. Again the surface would need to be approximated by a planar surface. Every sphere - plane connection needs to be defined and again we would want to take advantage of a pattern feature so we don't have to repeat our selections.
