Mechanism cam follower...

Guru's,

Is there a way to create a cam follower that is defined from TWO
SURFACES? I have some kinematic analysis to do on EXISTING
parts/models. I have a slide part with a roller following a cam. The
cam is a three dimensional surface and the follower's slide axis is not
coplanar to the axis of the cam. It's odd motion... The designer used
a driver on the cam to produce a trace curve on the cam and then used
that to create the cam surface. Unfortunately, he defined the cam
surface on an orthogonal plane which isn't correct.

What I would LIKE to do is set up a cam follower with the actual roller
surface "finding" it's tangent contact point with cam profile surface.
Then I can analyze the resulting motion to see how far off from the
"perfect" motion it is...

I've done this - once.  You define all of your mechanism constraints in
standard assy mode, except the cam.  Then you need to go into mechanism
mode to define the cam.  As I recall it wasn't that hard, once you got
through the typical Pro/E eccentricities.  I think once in mechanism, a
sub tree appears or maybe new branches in the standard tree.  There's a
'cams' branch and I think you maybe RMB on the branch to define a new
cam?  I'm afraid I don't remember all the details, hopefully that'll get
you pointed in the right direction.
