No warning on shutdown!

I'm beginning the get the feeling that Pro E doesn't like change. Can anyone tell me what is the right way to do this? I have piece of piping equipment with ports setup on it, and I have run piping from that item to various other places. Engineering tells me they want a size smaller on that equipment. So, I do a famous save-copy-as deal and create my new object, complete with ports. I go back to my assembly and do a replace on the original item, which (as expected) causes the start point of my pipeline to go away (lost references). I expected that. But when I attempt to redefine the start point to the port on the replaced equipment, I am immediately looking at my desktop. No warning, no error messages... just goodbye! And then i get to do the whole thing over again... and again etc.

Help?
