Last week I discovered something I want to share. While defining rule based layers in our model templates, I discovered that there is a significant difference between searching for 'Features of type curve' and 'Curve'. Or between 'Feature has axis' and 'Datum Axis'. Or 'Feature of type Datum Plane' and 'Datum Plane'.
I was never concerned about the difference, until lately, when I noticed that for inheritance features, the different behavior is significant. Using the Feature-approach, layers do not contain anything inside an inheritance feature. Using the other approach, entities from the inheritance feature are added to the ruled layer as well.
Are there maybe other phenomena regarding ruled layers worthwhile to share? Of course, adding features to a layer or adding entities to it is fundamentally different. But in what circumstances is it important to consider this?
Regards, Hugo.
ps.: why is the Isolate function so difficult to reach? Isn't anybody using it?

You are going to see that behavior, with any copied or imported geometry, same as with inherited features.
The principle reason more people don't use Isolate is a lack of good training, combined with poorly written on-line help documents. Those docs while being totally accurate, are totally useless for learning. They dance all around the topic describing aspects of layer operation, without explaining all of the rules that impact visibility.
The isolate icon can be added to a tool bar. Why it's not there, with hide and unhide, is most likely because who ever it was that chose the icons to be included by default, didn't think it important. I.E. They didn't get good training either.
Layers with rules are easier to create using the find dialog and the save query option.
Your observations on the differences entities vs features is accurate. One has to be quite careful not to mix up the two when adding items to layers. This is particularly important if Isolate is to be used with predictable results. I usually tell people to stick to features only, until they figure out why putting entities on layers, is helpful in ways that features alone can not.
