ALD/PE Support for alternative Hyphenation Algorithms

ALD/PE Support for alternative Hyphenation Algorithms

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.
All users will gain, but specifically publishers of books & STM Journals

2. What product and version are you currently running?
ALD 12 & PE 8

3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.
ALD supports it's own inbuilt 'hyphenologist' hyphenation algorithm for most languages and can also Support Dieckmann hyphenator through hardcoded support for a plugin from DATACOPY.de

However it would be advantageous to support more flexible hyphenation choices with support for external DLL's like the latest Dieckmann (without embedded code) and specifically in this request the Merriam-Webster hyphenation dictionary.

4. What is the use case for your organization?
Specific industry hyphenation requirements for our global ALD customers

5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?
Important to meet customer expectation and request and to compete with competitor pagination systems which have this ability.

Hi Chris

So you'd really want ALD to be able to link into any random external  DLL, not just a hyphenation one, in order to make this feature really useful.. From what I've seen online, using JavaScript to connect to DLLs in browsers is a really bad idea for security reasons, and therefore doing something like that in APE or ALD would be equally naughty. How would you want ALD to connect to these randoms?

Cheers

Simon
