Scale-to-fit styling option for text regions

For some page regions, e.g. titles on a chapter page or cover page, it would be nice to have the stylesheet scale the font size down when the content is too long to fit in the region at the preferred font size.

As a workaround, we can set conditions on the element based on the number of characters, but that is obviously not a good help because characters have different widths. Furthermore, all these conditions are complicating the stylesheet definition.

This is supported by the APP engine but not using the Styler interface. APP has an underlying feature called "try tables" that will reformat a block of text with different options until it fits (e.g. shrinking the inter-letter spaces, compressing the character widths, downsizing the font face). You would have to use APP edited source in order to apply that logic in Styler.

I found the documentation for this feature. You have to use the <?autotry> processing instruction and also create a "trytable" stream with the formatting logic... https://support.ptc.com/help/arbortext/app/r12.1.1.0/en/#page/appmacro%2Fappmacro%2FAPP1212.html%23

Hi

This is definitely in the realms of an ALD use-case rather than Styler. But, if you're really interested I created a sample for the Ann Arbor user conference back in 2019 which I'd be happy to send you. Get in touch if you'd like to see it.
