Show non-breaking spaces in Arbortext Editor

Show non-breaking spaces in Arbortext Editor

In Arbortext Editor, there is a preference option (View-Spaces and tabs) to display spaces in the document. This is very useful to ensure that there is only one space between each word. However, this option does not apply to non-breaking spaces. My suggestion is for this feature to consided non-breaking spaces, just like in Microsoft Word.

This is a good suggestion! I've been able to include this into our planning for our March 2013 Arbortext Editor release. So look for its availability then!

Thanks!

I just got done implementing a custom solution for this, so I'm glad to hear about it.

Pushpinder, is there a chance this will be configurable, so the adminstrator/implementor can determine which symbols are used to indicate the different types of spaces? For example, some customers might want to visually distinguish em-spaces from en-spaces, etc., as well as non-breaking spaces. It would be nice if this mechanism were general enough to handle whichever special space characters a user might be interested in (not just nbsp). Thanks!

Hi Clay,

For now, we are implementing it only for npsp, and it'll be turned on/off via Preferences. However, your suggestion is interesting, and I'd like to hear from other customers if that could be a useful feature for their environment too.

Thanks!

Hi Pushpinder--

Did this actually get implemented? I've searched the M080 help center, and the entries in the Preferences/Advanced dialog, and haven't been able to find any settings related to this. It doesn't seem to be rolled into View->Spaces and Tabs, at least according to my test.

Can you please point to some documentation on how this works, or, if it's not implemented yet, when it might appear? Thanks.

Hi Clay,

This is in the 6.1 release (not a 6.0 MOR). That release should be available towards the end of Q3.

It is rolled into the current set showspaces (View--> View Spaces and Tabs) Preference.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pushpinder--

Ah, that explains it. Thanks!

I just did some testing in Editor 7.0 M030.

Using the key combination CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE

  • HTML document: Inserts the nbsp entity.
  • XML document: Inserts Unicode Character 'NO-BREAK SPACE' (U+00A0)

I am wondering, is there still any reason to use the Arbortext PI _hardspace found on the Touchup menu? Should that menu option be changed to actually match the key combination CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE and consequently use the standardized Unicode character?
