Support of TTF and OTF within APP

Support of TTF and OTF within APP

It would be a great step forward for working with APP to have a better or maybe full support of Fonts as TTF or OTF.

Characters beyond FF00, Class Kerning, Anchors, cmap etc. are coming with the new versions of fonts from the different foundries.

These new fonts have to be used for more and more jobs, but the integrated features within these fonts are not accessable with APP.

(With InDesign and others they are.)

Therefore a (full) support of TTF and OTF is a Product Idea I would like to suggest.

The use of Hebrew and Arabic would be much easier and finally possible straight out of the (black) box.

This feature would ease the daily work of every user and it would end one long-lasting flaw of this unrivaled piece of software.

OpenType support is a known deficiency in APP, the main areas for improvement from our perspective:

  1. Support for "full" Unicode e.g. UCS4/UTF-32/UTF-16 surrogate pairs, meaning access to characters on Plane 1 and above.
  2. Support for EPS files that use OTF fonts, the current version of the PStill EPS interpreter will not work with OTF fonts.
  3. Support for GPOS tables, used for kerning in modern OTF fonts.
  4. Support for GSUB tables, used for ligaturisation and other features in modern OTF fonts.

A number of these things are/were high priority on the development plan last we heard and i hope they will remain so with new resource!

Hello

Work is underway to *try* to get APP compliant with OpenType fonts. We're hoping to deliver this in December 2018.
