E3: installing new doctype

Hi,

I have a pretty basic problem.

When trying to publish a document that uses a new doctype I created on E3, I get an error stating that the doctype hasn't been installed on E3.

This is how I installed the new doctype:

I created a directory called scrdaxdocbook in the C:\Program Files\Arbortext\E3\doctypes directory; in the scrdaxdocbook directory, I have a catalog file with this public identifier:

PUBLIC "-//EMC//DTD DocBook XML V4.0//EN" "scrdaxdocbook.dtd"

I also have an scrdaxdocbook.dcf file and numerous other files--mostly copied from the axdocbook directory and I changed their "axdockbook" portion of their file names to "scrdaxdocbook". I also did a search and replace within those files from "axdockbook" to "scrdaxdocbook".

I rebooted the E3 server machine.

I created the same directory on my local machine w/epic editor and my document that uses the scrdaxdocbook.dtd opens up without any errors.

What am I doing wrong?

thx--alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for raising this point. This issue has caused me consternation at
least twice. It's the sort of thing that happens infrequently, and the
resolution can be easy to forget.

Changing doctypes in the E3 install path may require some caution if you
upgrade E3 to a version down the road. It's probably better to put these
in [Epic-path]\custom\doctypes.

In my experience, the following steps solved the problem:
1. Check to ensure all files required for the doctype are present
(especially the catalog file).
2. Ensure that no files in the [Epic-path]\custom\doctypes directory (and
subdirectories) are set with "read only" permissions.
3. Restart the E3 service.

Regards,
Jason

I
apologize if this is a stupid question, but is the "scrdaxdocbook.dtd" file in the same directory with the
catalog? If it's not, you need to have the path in relation to the catalog
file inside the catalog. So instead of PUBLIC "-//EMC//DTD DocBook XML
V4.0//EN" "scrdaxdocbook.dtd" you would need PUBLIC "-//EMC//DTD DocBook XML
V4.0//EN" "relative\path\to\scrdaxdocbook.dtd".

Thanks Ed and Jason,

Actually, I did install the the e3 server custom directory (but I also installed it to the standard doctypes directory--just in case).

Yes, the catalog file is in the same directory as scrdaxdocbook.dtd (and, no, it's not a stupid question b/c, well, this is the first time I'm installing a new doc type).

thx--alex

Hello Alex,

I've had to troubleshoot the same problem
before.

The things that I have discovered causing
problems are:

Using a system identifier in your file...
e3 insists on a public identifier. Apparently this is going to change in
PE.

Having the app in a folder with a different
name to the DTD. So your scrdaxdocbook.dtd needs to be in a scrdaxdocbook\doctype
directory.

This functionality has been inherited
from Architect I believe.

Also, put a catalog entry into the main
application directory catalog that points to the customdoctype catalog.

good luck

Thanks Ed, Jason, and Tracey,

I apparently did not have all the axdocbook.dtd files and catalog entries definded correctly--I copied the directory from the custom\doctypes\axdocbook directory (a previous customization) and apparently it didn't have all the req'd files and/or catalog entries.

I copied the axdocbook directory from the e3\doctypes\axdocbook directory and finally got it installed.

Thanks again!
