Oops, I forgot that you said the PDF rendering was done by an external engine, not by Arbortext Editor. Well, in any case, you might be able to point the external engine to the correct graphics location. This also does not address the issue of the authors wanting to have a thumbnail or something while they are editing, but they have already lived with the reference tag method
