Linking tables

Linking tables

When I create a link to a paragraph I get the desired results. When I
create a link to a table the link does not work. I am using EPIC Editor
5.1 with 38784STD-BV7 fosi, dtd and supporting files.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

I left out a bit of relevant information: The link to tables work fine
in EPIC but not when converted to .pdf. The paragraph link works fin in
.pdf.

Are you using Print Composer or what?

Are you using the Arbortext Military Change Page Application (which is
where the BV-7 came from)?

We are using Arbortext Editor 5.2 M051, and we do not have any problem
with links to tables in PDF. I presume the tables are in the same file
you are publishing at the time.

Yes they are.

Are you using Arbortext's built-in link functionality, or something
else?

I am using the link function in Epic Editor.

I feel like I'm pulling teeth, here.

Are you using Acrobat Distiller (or Adobe PDF) as your default printer?
I don't really think that this would affect linking, but failure to use
Distiller as your default printer can cause some PDF problems.

If you are picking the correct id from the list when making the link and
your DCF file has your link tag defined correctly, which I assume it
does since links to paragraphs work, and it still doesn't work, then I
give up

I will try distiller and see if that helps.

Sorry you feel as if you are pulling teeth but I do not know what to
tell you other than what you ask.

thanks

Some more teeth: Are you really talking about missing links or is it
the adobe bookmarks that are missing? How is the PDF made?

File->Print Composed

The links are there in pdf but are not recognized, I would say, since
clicking on the link does not cause the target to come up as it does
with paragraph.

When I go to print composed there is no distiller to choose.

Are your "id" attributes defined as ID and "reference id" attributes defined as IDREF? I've noticed that PDF links don't work if those are defined as simple string values (PCDATA).

Try looking for Adobe PDF rather than distiller.

Can you post a little snippet of your sgml/xml so we can see how you are tagging these links?

Print Composed does not generate links or bookmarks. Compose PDF does.

To use "Compose PDF" you have to have Acrobat Distiler installed and the option "usedistiller" must be "on".

The help says:

set usedistiller= {on | off}

This option specifies the method Arbortext Editor uses to create PDF files when users choose File→Compose→PDF File. When set to off (the default), Arbortext Editor creates a PDF file directly from an XML file. When set to on, Arbortext Editor creates a PostScript file from an XML file, and then converts the PostScript file to a PDF file.

Note

You must have the Arbortext Publishing Engine installed and licensed for print/PDF composition to use the direct PDF method.

Direct PDF works IF you own the full version of Styler or the publishing engine and have the "Direct PDF" features turned on. I don't know anything else about Direct PDF.

I hope you are referring to the .dcf file. I have attached it.

When I print composed my links to paragraphs work but not the links for tables.

When I print composed I select Adobe PDF, the links to paragraphs work
and the links to tables do not.

He's talking about the DTD, but I doubt if that's the problem, since you
say links to paragraphs work. I will go with using Compose PDF instead
of Print Composed, although I don't know why paragraph links would work
at all with Print Composed.

Try Compose - PDF and make sure Adobe PDF is set to be your default
printer.

All,

The table link works when set within a paragraph. However, when I set it within a table column it will not go to the linked table.

This is within a table column:

Don't be put off by snarky comments like mine. I actually enjoy
thinking about other people's problems on Adepters, especially when I
might actually know something about the subject and I'm not up to my
eyeballs in alligators at work. I don't want to discourage you or
anyone else from asking questions.

Tools - preferences - advanced - usedistiller=on

As mentioned earlier, you need to set usedistiller=on. You can do this
on the command line. However, you should put it in a pubrc, or
instance.acl file in your doctype directory.

Ed,

I am not discouraged by your comments, have pulled my hair out over
this and seems there is no answer. I use the same _link
TargetTag="_target_XXX" for all, but when used within a table the link
to another table does not work but to a paragraph they do. Does not
make sense to me.
