PDF Commenting

PDF Commenting

Hello,

The new version of the Adobe PDF reader allows commenting and review modifications. Is there any way to turn this option on for the PDFs that are generated by PE? I have tried various options for PDF output, but have not come up with the magic combo yet. We are currently using Acrobat Distiller. Would we need to upgrade to the newest Adobe product (LiveCycle?)

PDF Commenting

Hi Melissa,
We post-process the PDFs (although we are using Direct PDF) manually. Open.
SaveAs to the required Acrobat version level. Works like a charm.

Unless you have scores, hundreds, or thousands of files to process, of
course ... :/

We also ran some reviews that required enabling a specific PDF file using
Adobe "server" software (I forget the exact product name, sorry) that
allowed the "vanilla" Reader (I think this was in the 7.x world) to annotate
PDFs. This allowed us (theoretically) to avoid purchasing the full Acrobat
for each reviewer, an expensive proposition. We had lots of trouble with
this and eventually abandoned it. This doesn't have much to do with
Arbortext, other than the PDFs fed into the Adobe server product were
PE/Direct PDF PDFs.

Hi Melissa-

Yes, alas, there are only two ways to enable commenting in a PDF (so you
can add comments using just the free Reader): open each file in Acrobat
Professional for a tedious, manual process, or use LifeCycle for
automatic comment enabling. I think this is part of Adobe's
strategy-make this incredibly tantalizing feature available, but make
sure the only ways to make it work are using your software.

RE: PDF Commenting

Thanks for the input. As far as post processing the PDF files goes this would likely not be an option as we tend to do batch PDF generation using PE. I thought I read somewhere that LifeCycle was the replacement for Distiller. Does anyone know if we can use LifeCycle with PE instead of Distiller? If so does PE allow you to set up so that the PDFs generated by PE allow commenting in the reader? If we had to post process the PE PDF after generation with LifeCycle it wouldn't be the end of the world as long as it could be done programatically, however, it would be ideal if PE was able to set this option.
