PE and using APTCUSTOM

PE and using APTCUSTOM

Has anyone been succesful in configuring PE to recognize
DTDs/FOSIs/Stylesheets in a drive outside the PE server? I have a Windows
2003 Server for PE and then I have a drive mapped to this server. On the
mapped drive is my custom area that I want to share between my Editor and
PE environment.

At best I can say this has been a flakey environment as I believe that it
has worked for me. It certainly doesn't violate any of the design
intentions of Editor and PE seems to support all the same mechanisms.

Am I just causing myself more pain than I need to or is this possible?

I've been told that the Compare PE config within Editor should report any
differences between what DTD and FOSI are read by the client and the
server. This comes back clean for the DTD in question. But when I go to
Compose PDF I get a warning about the FOSI not being found on the server.
Some times this still works and other times it seems to go back to the
default FOSI.

So here are some more details:

1) I'm running in a VM environment, PTC support is saying this is an
unsupported configuration. Might this be the real problem?

2) I have 2 FOSIs I'm working with. The one that is named the same as the
DTD seems to always be found. The test FOSI with a different names is one
that is reported as missing. So I know my configuration is ok and does
generally work.

3) To support this configuration a named user has to be defined to run
Editor whenever there is a request to PE. This seems to be to give PE
permission to read the files on the other drive. This whole process is
problematic for the following reasons:

a) This causes Editor to fail on launch when working on the server, you
have to switch back to the System user to make this work again, then you
have to switch it back to make PE work

b) In doing #a, it doesn't always restor properly. Windows validates the
account and PE reports the named user being in place, but PE fails to
produce anything.

c) #b when it fails, gives no error the requestor gets no response (good
or bad) from PE. The Editor only releases if I shut the PE server down.

d) Related to #c is that currently the named user is my own account. You
would think this would fix #a, but it doesn't. Another issue with this is
that my account has a password that expires every 90 days and this doesn't
propigate to Tomcat. So this causes a #c condition until I remember to go
reset the password on PE.

Are all my problems due to the VM? Is this a combination PE and MS issue?
Any ideas?

Dan,

Just a guess but does your document have a hardcoded stylesheet
associated with it. That's when I see the error you're talking about.

Also can you have the custom folder on PE be the share?

Also I believe we are currently running PE on a VM box without problems.

nope, I've been setting it from the Format -> Select Stylesheet. When
I do put the association in, it comes out as just the filename, but
the warning shows the full path. also I have 2 stylesheets in the
same location, it consistently complains about the one, but can still
print with it

It could be except for some IT issues right now. Also my preference
is to keep it with my data, rather than on the remote server. I have
tried this but I get the same error message about it not being on the
server. so it does seem like there is a hidden link some where, at
the same time the path it reports as being missing is correct, It
will also report links to a stylesheet I edit locally, so it does see
differences in my use of these stylesheets,

PTC was just waving the flag of not tested and that being the source
of my problems.

Its a confusing situation. It looks like I can ignore the
error/warning, but I don't understand why the compare tool reports no
problem, but when I run the compose it immediately reports the problem.
