Spellcheck and abbreviations

This is a long-standing problem with Arbortext Editor (going
all the way back to Adept 5.4!) When a user runs spellcheck,
the tool stops on abbreviations such as "U.S." and "N.M.".
The "Add" button does not work for these words; the only way
to get them into a user's personal spellcheck dictionary is
from the command line (spell -accept U.S.). We have over
500 editors writing about legal topics, which include an
unbelievable number of abbreviations, so running a program
to pre-populate each user's aptspell.acp file is
impractical. Has anyone figured out a solution or
workaround?

Joan,

Gee has it been languishing around that long? I'd rather try to figure
out an array than to set up a local dictionary for the spell check. I'd
love to help, but even with previous posts on how to make this work, I've
never succeeded. 😞

The DOD isn't much better and if you deal with Navy data, I don't think
they know how to speak anything but acronymese (imagine the spell check on
that last made up word).
