previous ones, which did happen. But, the v5.2 "Start" menu options
were still in the Arbortext menu path. So I tried to do an uninstall
and from the "Add/Remove Programs" option under the Control Panel, but
the uninstall didn't remove any files or the "Start" menu. Why does the
uninstall work? Am I not thinking clearly with this upgrade?

I think any major version from Arbortext is a new install, not an
upgrade. I suspect the uninstall didn't complete successfully because
you've got two versions in a single directory path. It's possible that
the other uninstall (5.2 if you ran 5.3 uninstall, or vice versa) would
help, but my guess is that you're going to have to manually remove
files and folders. Not sure about what gets into the registry.
Contacting support might be worthwhile.
I recommend installing products in a major-version-named directory. For example, any 5.2 would go into:
...\Arbortext\PE52
Any 5.3 would go into:
...\Arbortext\PE53
Minor versions *are* upgrades and while cumulative require at least the
base product installation. That is, to start from scratch and get to
5.3 m010, you would need to do a base install of 5.3 (F000) and then an
upgrade to m010 which amounts to unzipping a bunch of files into the
PE53 directory (assuming you've installed as I've described above).
