Ever since 5.1 (we're now at 5.3 M060), we've had quite a few customizations to XUI, Java classes, DTDs etc. that we've been managing via "patch" releases sent out to our writers using a zip executable that simply overwrites files in the custom dir. Our yearly writing cycle also lends itself to annual upgrades, and I'm starting to look into deploying 5.4 for all of our users.
That said, I've been reading up on the compact installation option, including the new installer creator, and I think it might be able to replace our old patch system.
Has anyone used these methods to deploy the editor to writers? If so, any tips or pros/cons would be helpful.
Our customizations are fairly straight-forward, and usually involve new compiled doctypes for tag additions, a new java class for XUI customizations, the occasional medical dictionary and XSLT for content render.
