Hi all,
Thought I'd report an interesting problem support and I diagnosed recently.
One of my authors reported an Editor crash while formatting some content
(via PE) containing new elements using an updated Styler stylesheet. Editor
submitted the composition request, but then failed with an "[A12177] Out of
virtual memory space. A swap file the size of at least 24 MB is recommended.
However, the actual amount required will depend on how many documents are
open and how big they are. Other applications running simultaneously will
also require swap space. To increase your swap file size, open the Control
Panel, select Help, and search for "Virtual Memory". Follow the instructions
provided." Editor quit immediately upon clicking OK in the dialog.
After various testing, settings changes, etc., we determined that a new
element and related changes in the stylesheet were calling the Symbol font
*and* Publishing Engine was using symbol.ttf (Open or True Type font) while
the failing client workstation was using sy______.fon (Type 1 PostScript
font). I did not see the problem since my workstation was using symbol.ttf.
Replacing the .fon with .ttf on the problem workstation allowed that author
to successfully compose PDFs. We are using DirectPDF (or is it PDF Direct?)
and not Distiller. We did not discuss whether Editor and PE *should* be
successful in this configuration or try anything to get them to work since
we were at liberty to replace the clients' font.
Now tuck that into one of the dusty back corners of *your* virtual memory
space.
