[Summary] Best Method to get "dumb solid"

Thanks for the help!



My question was unintentionally misleading - I don't necessarily need a
.STP file. I just need a dumb solid. I asked for .STP since I know
from previous experience that they're more user friendly than IGS
imports.



I tested a variety of methods. Shrinkwrap is the best. [save a copy -->
shrinkwrap] I had used this a long time ago on individual parts and
remembered the faceted / STL-esque appearance which is not what I was
looking for. BUT when you use the "Merged Solid" option when exporting,
the results are exactly what I was looking for. You also automatically
get a proe part with your start part features. I don't see any effect
of the quality parameter for this method [unlike faceted method, which
is affected by quality].



Here's a summary of other methods. I was concerned with file size,
whether or not the exported file imports as solid, and pre-selection
highlighting.

I should note that the .STP methods were very laborious since they
involved creating a solid surface quilt within each assembly component.

And one more note: shrinkwrap creates an external copy geom feature.
This is good and bad. Good because your shrinkwrap will update when the
original parts are updated. Bad if you don't want that or if you are
using the config pro setting [Retrieve_data_sharing_ref_parts yes] that
opens parent files into session.

If the target person has ProE (even older versions than you) then a neutral file is the best.

" If you create a shrinkwrap as you indicated (Save a Copy > Shrinkwrap)
and Merged Solid, the CopyGeom has no parents. So, there no
associativity at all. At least, to my knowledge."

oops... late response alert!!

A certain connector manufacturer has downloadable connectors--- as
assemblies... pins, headers etc....

For ECAD exports, parts work better... I usually merge all the parts
into one, open the merged part, place my pin1 csys appropriately, fill
in a gap or two, and export the STEP file from the part..... import into
a new part and scrap the original data..... a nice dumb database with
pin1 in the right place.....
