We have a large assembly (4000+ components) with 6 copies of the base weldment/machining assembled on top of itself. One was for cabling, one was for piping, one was for RF system...

In the process of trying to determine if this is worth fixing I thought I'd ask if others encountered a similar situation. Are there any tricks to swapping out a base component, such as edit the assembly file header and replace subcomponent "base-b.asm" with "base-a.asm"?

Tweaking the text file has gone away for some versions (since ProE 16?). Anyway, it did not always work...

However, it may be even more straightforward:

1. Put base_a.asm and base_b.asm away somewhere safe.
2. Open Your assy in ProE, rename base_a.asm to base_b.asm and file the result. Exit ProE
3. replace the new base_b.asm (which actually was base_a.asm) by the original base_b.asm.
4. Open again in ProE - and fix any missing references.

If the two subassemblies were mostly similar, this will work. If not, well, there will really be some missing references...
