In very large assemblies, the selection of edges and vertex take precedence over surface. I may end up cycling past edge after vertex after edge selection for half a minute before it will select a surface.

In the lower right, there's a box that reads "Smart" when you open the part, and "All" when you go into the Measure tool.  This is the selection filter, and you can select Surface from it to specify that you want to pick a surface and not other stuff right now.

Mathew , Thank you very VERY MUCH. That little tidbit of info has eluded our department for years and works really well. That settings was just always left on "Smart". Oh, the irony. Thanks a million.
