Seriously, I would be happy with a Product that simply didn't crash !! or
was predictable and consistent.



Just this last week, I've had 3 Pro/Dumps losing 4-6 hours of work. Yea I
know its easier to do the work the second time. but having Pro simply leave
you at your desktop is Very frustrating ( to say the least ).

Although this would be a nice capability, it's not that hard to use Both-Sides, and enter a depth that is well beyond the part extents. If neccessary, use a relation to ensure that the depth is adequate.

However, there is a more practical issue. In the past, I've done timing tests, and found that the Thru-All option (when available) is significantly slower than a fixed depth. I assume that Pro/E simply takes too much time to determine the depth needed to go through the part. Therefore, I no longer use Thru-All anymore.

Holy doubleicty Batman!



Seriously though as if one thru all was not bad enough. If you want
fast models, don't let Pro/E do the thinking for you, but rather build
in the design intent yourself. Thru all means Pro/E has to pause
creating the feature, calculate the bounding box for the finished part
then go back and finish the feature. If you were building a model and
using just what's necessary to conserve energy and time, thus making it
most efficient. You would not run out to infinity, but rather just to
where it's necessary, like up to a surface, or to what's needed, say a
distance.

I was referring to a 1-click solution, rather than

Click the Options button > click the pulldown > click through all > click
the other pulldown > click through all.



I have seen this happen countless times (it's been a common practice
everywhere I've worked), and it seems that for something so commonly used
there ought to bee a button for it in the Depth selector flyout.

Yes, a round ended slot in the sketcher would be something useful, but I stopped asking for it ten years ago...after asking for it for 5 years!

Yeah, those are REALLY effective! It's only been about three years since I

sent mine in, and though there's been no activity on it so far, I'm sure

they'll get right on it within the next decade or two!

As far as a slot goes. I use the Sketcher Pallet quite a bit. PTC has one, I
believe its called racetrack for the creation of a slot. While not perfect,
it does get you started.



I have created Custom pages in the Sketcher pallet to include the "Standard"
structural shapes for C-Channel, I & W-Beams, Angles. etc. These do save
some time. With that said, I find myself more frequently using an existing
part/drawing rather than starting from scratch every time.

Actually in 3.0 there are different shapes in the sketcher and you can add
you own. But....the idea of not even entering into sketch mode is appealing.
Like radii. You don't have to sketch those. Well.....it can be done if you
really needed to.

Sometimes 'thru all' is the design intent. I want the cut to go through
all of the model, regardless of what size or shape it is. Then, if the
size changes I don't have to wonder if the fixed depth is now too short
or too long - it's going through all. I can go into insert mode and add
and delete features to my heart's content. I can build acres of new
geometry. When I resume my cut it's going to do what I want - go
through all of the model.

Up to surface can be good, if there's an appropriate surface available
that you want to be the parent of this feature. But then, if the
feature creating that surface changes, my cut may not do what I want any
more.

My idea is one similar to the way CADDS5 had it.



SLOT would appear just like the HOLE dialogue does

You would then have multiple options on how you would like to configure and
place it

i.e. LxW, Centers, Placed by slot center, edge, end - etc and on.

You could also configure any notes along with the slot - similar to Tapped
Holes.

In sketcher, you can save a sketch of a slot and recall it any time you need one in sketcher by SKETCH, DATA FROM FILE, and choosing the sketch you want (you just need to have a folder with your sketches included easily available) Change a couple dims, restrain it, and there you go. My favorite I created and use so often is a hex sketch driven by one dimension. I created the slot sketch back in April of '04 and looking at my sketch library, over a period of a month I created 16 more sketches that I still use often. This is from '04, and they still work in WF2.



UDF's are great too. I use them just as often, however, you really do need to be anal about setting up UDFs the right way or they may not always work in every situation. Even simple UDFs need to be carefully thought out when creating them.

I had one that was sort of accepted, but in a broken way.

After asking that the -postscript- output be changed so the line caps
and line joins are rounded, PTC added that capability solely to the
-PDF- output as a config option. This means that -postscript- output,
which can be easily manipulated with scripts and such, is still broken.

From what I've read so far, the PDF output isn't enjoyed much.

Still missing - external files for .ps header, footer, start page and
show page. Also, export of the font definitions into the .ps file and
text string placement (for searchable and editable postscript/distilled
PDF.)

Remember when we could only go forward in the model prior to Model Player? What was that called again? I submitted an enhancement (and I'm sure others did too) back around rev 13 or 14 to allow the user to go either forward or backward. They put it in what...rev 2000i or 2001? Not bad. Only about three years (This was the time when they released a major version every six months). At least they put it in!

PTC has never implemented one of my many requests.

I have even e-mailed, ask Michael Campbell direct.

To name a few:

I asked for the accuracy issue be resolved, which constantly results in mold split problems, import etc., problems for us mold and complex plastic part designers. Yes there are usually work arounds, but at the cost of extra time.

I asked for a way to turn off pre-highlight in WF. Then be able to select what ever without having to go through the selection filter for picks of some items. Or a config.pro for such. Yes you can build mapkeys, however ultimately more key strokes and picks, lost time. Pre-highlight can be a bit of a nightmare on large imported parts.

I asked for the STL export to be improved, which fails from time to time on complex parts. My seat of SW has never failed to export a STL file.

I agree with what someone else said. These do not make the demo look any better or are not easy enough to implement. Its much easier for PTC to move commands around and call it a up-dated improved version.

Let's turn off the power for a week and see how long it takes you to
make a drawing.

I wonder if any of you could make a drawing if you had to go back to the
board.

By the way, I have a nice drafting machine, templates, mechanical
pencils, leads,
beam compass, standard compass, sanding pad, pounce bag (Guess what this
is.)???
scale and triangles. Oh, but who would know how to use them.

I still use my drafting brush to clean up chips on my milling machine in my home shop.

My son uses my compasses etc to do his math homework.

There are still a few of us left that know how to push a pencil for a living. I did it for a few years before Computervision CADDS 4 came along and saved me from a life of obsolescence.
