FYI - 3GB Switch

While most of us use this with Pro/ENGINEER, I thought it was an interesting
article. I HIGHLY recommend IT folks subscribe to Techrepublic.com.
Excellent all around site for IT.

Watch out for negative side effects of the /3GB boot.ini switch

Takeaway:

Just because something has been working without any glitches for a long
time, don't assume that it won't create a problem.

Even though the problem described in the article below involves running Exchange Server (which most CAD users do not)... we ran into similar problems with resource limitations due to the 3GB switch.

In short, the 3GB switch reduces the virtual memory reserved for the OS from 2GB to 1GB. In our case, this was not enough and we had problems mapping network drives, etc.

Tweaking the 3GB option to leave 1.1GB for the OS fixed our problems... that extra 100MB of headroom did the trick. This is accomplished using a USERVA setting of 2900 (the default is 3000 ... which is 3GB)
