WF5 Highlight Messages

This week is my first serious work in WF5 (out clients are typically
slow to upgrade), so I'm finding little annoyances that I'm sure most of
you have already dealt with.

In WF4 and older, there was an area at the bottom of the window that
would show the name of the item that was highlighted on screen and would
update with the pre-highlighting. . I'm not talking about the message
area, but I'm not sure what it was called. It was very handy for
determining what you were about to select. If I hold my mouse still
long enough, I get a tool tip pop up with that info, but this was
instantaneous.

In WF5 it's gone, how do I get it back?

Doug,

I believe the config option provide_pick_message_always is the closest thing available in WF5. Set it to Yes to enable seeing the messages. They will appear at the top of the screen, though. I don't think there is a way to get the messages at the bottom of the screen anymore.

Thanks Brian,

This option only shows the feature #/name after it is selected. It helps,
as it is likely the only way to quickly learn what is selected - especially
if the feature is in a pattern or in a group or in a sub assy and cannot be
seen highlighted in the tree. And so, I have this option enabled.

But the tool tip showing the feature in a pre-highlight state is the info
that Doug (and I) are looking for. I think the Status Bar is what it was
called - it is called that in Win Explorer.

I remember TweakUI - a utility produced by Microsoft that allowed you to
remove the delay in showing tool tips and flyout menus. (in XP?) That would
suit me fine - if the tool tip showed immediately when pre-highlighting. It
is the delay that Doug and I are complaining about. Anyone know how to set
that delay in Win7?

Creo users: Does this functionality come back in Creo1.0?

Hello,

The following is an email that I sent our users about this very same problem and how to fix it.

Prior to WF5, when you moved your cursor over a part in an assembly or feature in a part, it would highlight and be immediately identified in the status bar at the bottom of the Pro/E window. This made it easy to quickly identify a part or feature. Now with WF5, you have to hold your cursor over a part or feature for 2 or 3 seconds before a "tool tip" pops up and indentifies it. Sometimes I've noticed that the "tool tip" doesn't pop up at all. If you're impatient like me you can go back to the old way the part or feature identity displays.

1. In Pro/E, select the "Tools" drop down menu and pick Options.

2. Click on the Find button, a dialog box will pop up, then search for the option "summary_help".

3. Set the value to Yes and click on the Add/Change button then the Close button.

4. Then click on the Apply and Close button in the Options window.

Now the part or feature identity will immediately show up it the message window directly above the Model Tree.

WOW! This is a great tip!!!

This has been one thing that my users have complained about every now and
then.

As a side note, I've been playing with Creo a little bit lately, and I've
noticed that it tends to be a lot better at selecting parts / geometry /
whatever, out of the box. It appears to be a big improvement.

The setting summary_help is set as default YES in WF4 and appears in the
lower left corner of the window. In WF5 it is set to NO as default since
there isn't the extra bar at the bottom of the window.
