hex around a number

Is there a way to put a hex around a number without using a symbol?

Like @[9@] yields a square around the number 9.

OK, here is another option. I can add a symbol to the note with &sym(name), but how do you assign a value to the variable text? I don't want the promt for the input.

Here is an idea create a mapkey. Have it prompt for two dig points, one for the text string and one for the hex.
