mechanica book

Hello everybody,

I'm using Mechanica for several years and I would like to use it more efficiently.

I found several books on amazon.com on mechanica wildfire 2 but I don't know if they can really learn me anything.
Can someone tell me what should be the best choice and where can I find it (if not on amazon) ?

Hello everybody,

I asked last week what should be a good book for an advanced learning of Mechanica.

The only response I received adviced me to go on a more general book about Fae than just Mechanica :
"Building Better Products with finite element analysis" by Vince Adams and Abraham Askenazi.

Because of shipping cost, I first look for this book in my country and UK online stores and I found 3 books, everytime with the same tittle and writers but published on october, november or december 1998 and with 3 differents publishers and size :
- onword press : 624 pages
- high mountain press : 400 pages (about $20 less than the first one).
- thomson learning : 587 pages.
Sometimes Isbn is the same and sometimes it's different.

It's very strange so I would like to know, for those that known thoses books if the difference is just in the "pages layout" or if the first is more complete than the others.

Hi GB,



I do not know of the books you refer to but have in the past found
Thomson Learning to have an excellent product with good layout and good
service/tech support.



In regard to the more general approach I have found that most references
in this area are very broad and usually way in advance of what you can
get from Mechanica. Don't be put off but you may find after getting a
reference like this you will then want to get a bigger better FEA
package.

However if you get a specific Mechanica manual you will face the problem
of the thing being out of date by the time you get half way through the
text.

Mechanica being a first pass engineers' tool for design confirmation is
in my opinion a very basic package but great if you don't have a lot of
time for numerical verification.



Maybe take an afternoon to visit a local technical library such as can
be found on the campus of the local engineering school, if they are any
good they should have at least a dozen references and probably a
Mechanica manual or two. It usually will not cost a thing to look
through the data base or sit down and skim through the texts themselves.





Just some thoughts on the subject, your call!

With all due respect to Vince Adams (He's a very nice guy and knows what
he's talking about) you'll find that this book of his is now a little bit
out of date - being 7 years old.

You'll find that the look and feel of Mechanica is quite different now to
what it was then. Although many of the points he makes are valid and it's a
good way of understanding more about the underlying technology in Mechanica
and also general ways to tackle FEA problems.

Do you have some specific problems that you need help with?

There is a wealth of info in the Knowledge Database on ptc.com tech support
area - but since you're using a home email I have no clue who you work for
and if you have access to this system.

Maybe you can talk to your local PTC Office or reseller and get them to help
you.

I'll come over to France and visit you myself if you'll pay for my time,
flights and accomodation!
