There are a lot of thicken options.
None of these option allow me to do what I thought was possible in
earlier versions. Thicken a thin Solid

Are you sure you're not actually thinking of surface offset "expand"?

1. Select the surface on your solid model to "thicken".
2. Select, EDIT, OFFSET and choose the 3rd down option, "EXPAND"
3. Type in a value and hit the check mark.
