Ability to add multiple materials to a single part

Ability to add multiple materials to a single part

Mass properties is a critical part of our business. We have run into cases in which the mass properties have been significantly off due to plating. Currently there is no easy way for me to assign additional mass due to plating. I understand that I can manually designate mass properties or create a relation and add mass that way but those methods are not parametric.

There should be a way to assign a material to a single feature or a way to assign a density and thickness to selected surfaces.

The solution should be implemented so it drives the PRO_MP_MASS parameter.

Have you thought of creating your plated parts as an assembly?

Make a thin shell part of the plating thickness tied to the original part and bring them both into the assembly.

Assign material density as required to both parts and the assembly has the proper weight now.

Yes, I have thought about this. There are downsides to this. The biggest being the parametric relationship between the two parts (making sure one changes when the other does) and configuration management.

It could be done, but our CM group would frown on it if they allowed it at all. I also don't think there should have to be an external reference to another part just so this can be done.
