Allow "template_solidpart" etc. to be set to none/empty, to force user to select a template.

Allow "template_solidpart" etc. to be set to none/empty, to force user to select a template.

Currently "template_solidpart" and "template_designasm" can only be set to a path of a .prt file.

It does not seem to be possible to set it to none/empty, and force the user to select a template form the list.

Use Case:

We have divisions that use Metric and Imperial, and so have a start part for each. We don't want to specify one or the other as default as they may be used by accident. We don't want to have to manage 2x config.sup files either.

We want the default to be none so the user has to make a conscious selection each time.

In the Create new file dialog, just uncheck the Use default template box. This will present you with a listing of all of your start part templates.

Depending on how often they switch between metric and english files, you could use a group config.pro.

I manage 2 sites but only have 1 network installation of Creo. I use the config.pro file in the user's home directory to set group configuration options. I also have a custom script that they use to launch Creo. The script selects the license and which system they want, we are using 2 separate Windchill installations. I then have the script copy a config.pro file to the user's home folder so they always get my latest group settings. You could specify which start part template to use in the master config.pro that gets copied each time a user starts Creo. I do have separate drawing templates for each group now, but easy to add lines for start templates.

Yes, @BenLoosli , we already have as you have shown above but we don't want the Imperial one to be the default selection (above you have shown "start_part" as the default selection), as this may accidentally be selected instead of MM.

We want the box next to the "Browse" button to be able to have "None" and force a selection before the user can proceed i.e. grey out the OK button until a template is selected.

This way the user is consciously making a decision on whether on what start template they want.

I get that we can use 2 config.pro files, but this proposed enhancement would negate the need for that and any custom scripts etc.

Would this setting help? force_new_file_options_dialog yes

@lhoogeveen this only gets you to the screen @BenLoosli has shown in his screenshot above. The default selection is still set by "template_solidpart" (or equivalent option for assemblies).

I need the default selected option to be empty once we get to that screen to force the user to select a template manually.

This mockup shows what we want:

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.

Energy Industry, Manufacturing. Role: CAD Application Engineer.
2. What product & version are you currently running?

Creo Parametric 4.0 M110
3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.

Trying to standardize on one set of configs, but this issue is making it difficult.
4. What is the use case for your organization?

We have divisions that use Metric and Imperial, and so have a start part for each. We don't want to specify one or the other as default as they may be used by accident. We don't want to have to manage 2x config.sup files either.
5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

One standard set of configs, meaning no custom batch file to copy configs etc.

This is where when I was on Unigraphics, I had a custom file menu created in GRIP. UG had options in their code to overwrite their own programming for custom coding with environment variables to designate which code section was to be replaced and by which custom program. It worked perfect for just this type of situation. I would just replace the create_new_file option with my custom code and when the user selected New File, my custom code would be triggered and I could then display a list of templates to be used for my new part.

There are times I wish PTC would allow this same level of customization.
