Automatic Software Updates

Automatic Software Updates

Provide an option to automatically update Creo without admin rights.

It can be done (everything else does it, after all).  The primary concern is preserving customizations, which has always been a problem with Creo.

Also, psf files would need their awful build number dependence removed.

Edited to fix broken link.

There are many people who run multiple builds of a software like Creo for multiple reasons. I would not like auto updating since I have 4 builds of Creo 2, 2 builds of Creo 3 and 1 build of Creo 4 on my computer today.

That's why it would be an option, and I'm not talking about version upgrades (e.g. Creo 3 to Creo 4), just build updates (e.g. M130 to M140).  Out of curiosity, why do you need so many different builds of one version?

Support issues and testing. What works in one build may be broken in another. And sometimes fixed in a newer build! ☺

Well, you wouldn't be using auto-update on your test and support builds, and it would certainly prompt you anyway, if enabled.  Rather, it would be for the users to stay up to date without needing to run an installer or for IT to push it out.  A lot of companies have a deployment software to handle this sort of thing, but even then it isn't so much an update as it is a replacement, and how do they handle home users?  My home users either need to bring the new version on a drive, or download it slowly via VPN.  With updates straight from PTC, they would only need the automatic downloads which my script provides.

I use a network install so all users have the same build and I only have 1 place to do an upgrade to.

Also, being in a secure environment, I have no internet connectivity on my production machines, so there could never be an automatic pushed upgrade.

I have to schedule Windows upgrades with IT to get them to push them out.

We also do not support builds being automatically upgraded.  We only have users on different builds for testing purposes.  We have found that some builds create problems through the testing and would not want everyone to be on a build with issues.

Why not just give a config option for this?  Those that wish to utilize it can, those who don't wont.  Could be as simple as checking the PTC server for a new datecode once a week during Creo startup and popping up a dialoge asking for permission to update when required.
