I would add that the box selection should be permitted/enabled at all times, including during a function. For example, in Creo 5.0.2, once you start the  Flexible modeling move function, you can't box select faces... You have to exit the function, box select the faces you want and restart the function with your current selection... I don't know if this behavior has changed in Creo 7, so disregard my comment if it's now corrected.
