Color of hole feature with thread.

Color of hole feature with thread.

When model display changes to shade, we can not see the thread surface. So, it is difficult to understand the hole has a thread or not. It is good to set a special color automatically to the hole cylinder surface when it has a thread. This is implemented in Solid Edge.

Inventor adds a 'thread' map to show / simulate the threads in a hole or on a shaft.

Hi Mitsunori and Paul

yes Inventor shows this

Nice isn't it ?

This is not currently not planned/confirmed for the next release (Creo 8.0), but we will keep it under consideration for the future.

In the interin, it would be nice if the two half-cylindrical hole surfaces would be split in two parts, one for the drilled part, and other for the threaded part, with an edge separating the two zones (two 180º arc edges forming a circle ath the boundary between thread zone and drill zone). Also, letting the painting of the the two surfaces algorithm to be modified to select surfaces independently, changing its color, but not propagating to all the tangent surfaces, so that we could paint the thread zone with a different color than the drilled zone. Or better yet, let Creo automatically do the painting for us. Also, the thread and drill color should be a new kind of parameter that gets defined at a top level assembly, to have consistent colors for a whole project, instead of a config.pro defined one. Currently there are Boolean, Integer, String and Real parameters. I propose to add a new type of parameter, "Color" parameter, that is in practice constituted by 3 (or 4) Byte parameters (0..255) specifying Red, Gree and Blue (optionally Alpha). I also propose to have a new parameter hierarchy level (or Object Type, as in "Part, Feature, Inherited, Quilt, Body, Surface, Edge, Component (in assembly mode), etc...). I propose to create another parameter object type or hierarchy called "Top Level" or "Project Level". This would allow the easier sharing of common parameters for a whole project. This would mean that any parameter with the same name and type in any part or assembly with a parameter defined as a Top Level would automatically share the same value. This would make it possible to have consistent hole and thread colors for a whole project (a kind of palette), that would avoid having to individually open parts to change their hole colors, if we use the same parts in another project whose clients want us to have the holes color coded differently. (As a side note, the global color parameters would also solve another annoying problem in MFG (mold cavity manufacturing module), where the colors of the split parts are color coded according to a two global colors defined by RGB values in config.pro (one color defines the plastic color copied from the reference model, and another color to identify the steel parting surfaces. We have to manually change all this colors whenever we extract a part since we have multiple clients that wants those surfaces colored differently, and we can only have specify one set of colors in the config files. We would have to specify a sub-config.pro for each client to have the colors assigned correctly. It's better to have them as a global parameter for each project, where the global parameter is defined as a top level assembly, and the colors defined there.

For a lot of engineers who have been working with SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Solid Edge... prior to Creo Parametric, the threaded hole display is a very frustrating issue. Nevertheless I personally find the Creo Parametric CAD modeling very intuitive and in many areas better than SOLIDWORKS (in which I modelled and trained people for over 13 years), the hole thread display is really a "thorn in the eye".

What wonders me the most, is that you find a lot of posts on the www concerning this topic (a good visual presentation on the model to seperate threaded holes and normal holes) which are already some years old and PTC has done nothing to properly address and solve the issue in one way or another.

This is an example from Siemens NX, where a dashed line is shown around the threaded hole.

Perhaps this can be created by including a cosmetic sketch inside the hole feature ?

Now that Creo 9 already supports co-planar independent divided surfaces without forced simplification, the same could be applied to cylindrical surfaces, and used in the hole command, where the threaded part could be surface separated from the non-threaded part, and allow them to be automatically colored differently. This way, even in shading visualization mode, the user could see that the limit or depth of the thread, as a differently colored surface, which could even be automatically applied a texture simulating the "zebra" effect according to the pitch value (diffuse and bump texture). This would enanhce even more the visualization, making sure that it is a threaded hole, like most of the current other CAD software packages do.

@mneumueller  sir, Greeting , What is the update on it ?? It will be very good functionality for MBD.

I was already there in IFX
