Create a setting for GD&T standard

Create a setting for GD&T standard

There are multiple standards for GD&T. While some are very similar (use many of the same symbols), there are symbols that one standard will use that will not be valid in another. The current Template Browser presents many symbols, but currently does not distinguish between the standards. As a result, it is possible for users to not only mix symbols from multiple standards on the same drawing, but it doesn't make it easy for administrators to enforce a particular standard for their users.

I am certainly not in favor of handcuffing the creativity of the powers that be in "acceptable" standards for their industry.  This is allowed by various standards to some degree.

I would be all for "global" standards (remove the ISO/ASME/JIS... etc) and create a dialog similar to the config.pro and choose the "appropriate" format for common standards.  This releases PTC from trying to stay up with the standards and puts the responsibility on the industry to determine each acceptable means of presentation.

This is an "opportunity" for PTC where we could still select the "known" standard we want and knowingly modify the choices from that point in an intelligent and forthcoming dialog on what to expect for each choice, which standard they are derived from, and a graphic example of what to expect on the drawing.  This just seems logical to me.

Remember that this goes beyond GD&T.... think weld symbols as well.
