Create an config option to display the ptc_common_name in user interfaces

Create an config option to display the ptc_common_name in user interfaces

Working with auto generated numbers from windchill the list items in all user interfaces ( include/exclude models from sections or simp. representations, confict box, open/save dialog, ...) are only given by the filename=auto number.

There should be an config option as

display_modelname_in_ui

with values

  • file_name (display filename only, standard)
  • common_name (display ptc_common_name only)
  • file_common_name (display filename & ptc_common_name)

Actually, everything in Creo is based on filename only, not number.  If number doesn't match the filename, there is no way to currently open or display something based on number only.

Let's add one more:

  • number (display the Windchill number only)

Of course it would be very helpful to access this number in Creo as well.  Right now it's inaccessible without customization.

We use auto numbering and are running into this quite often. Save As, Windchill asking to check-out a lot of parts, replacing components, ... all show the filename/number only, where the information by which a designer can recognize the part is actually the name, not the number.

I'd like to see implemented a more general functionality and a  configuration for the different existing UI elements that contain the  "Filename", see Replace "Filename" in the whole UI by a configurable string that can include one or more parameters (User-defined + Internal).

To my opinion it is not necessary to allow user defined parameters, because this fields are reponsible for the identification of the models/cpomponents.

If no Windchil is used this identification is defined by filename & common_name. But the common name is not displayed and mostly not used, because the filename can be used as descriptive name.

If Windchill is used, this identification is defined by WCnumber = filename & common_name. In this case the common_name is normaly used as descriptive identification.

Therefore I think the three options are enough:

  • file_name (display filename only, standard)
  • common_name (display ptc_common_name only)
  • file_common_name (display filename=WCnumber & ptc_common_name)

At the end it does not matter if there are more options if at least these 3 options are available.

I think Marc has a point.

We sync File Name, (Common) Name and Number (not sure why, possibly legacy data) and I need custom/user-defined attributes/parameters to identify models.

PTC will investigate this request to see what options could be presented.  At this time, we have no plans to implement a solution, but based on our findings we can consider changing this decision in the future.  We will need to collaborate with the WC team to see the best options and identify any potential risk in only showing a defined name.

Will this be investigated again at PTC?

We can only underline the idea, one possibility would be very helpful.
