Enable Parent Features to be Edited Without Having to Break Child Dependencies

Enable Parent Features to be Edited Without Having to Break Child Dependencies

I am posting this on behalf of a colleague.

He has a model which contains dependent mirrored features, but this also pertains to models containing any of the copy feature options.

He has tried to redefine the parent feature of one of the mirrored features, but gets the error

"References to additional 3d geometry may not be made, please select again'.

The KB document CS51614 recommends to make the dependent copy independent, or delete it.

That defeats the purpose of having a dependent mirror.

He would like to request that parent features of dependent copy features be able to be redefined without the children having to be deleted or have their dependencies broken.

Absolutely.  Dependant feature copies are useless without this enhancement.  In fact, when i come across a model with dependant feature copies it usually costs me more time than it saves because I end up having to redo all the copies if I need to change the original.

I almost never use dependant copies in my models and it would be handy to have a robust way to do so.

Absolutely. I don't know who many times I have gone into a part to redefine it, and then gone "@#%! It's a mirrored feature! I can't select that edge as a reference!" A pointless restriction.

I agree. How is this kid bossing around the parent and telling it it can't change. Make me an orphan, first, then you can change. In a world of multiple dependencies, you'd think there'd be better parenting. The criminals are suggesting infanticide. Fie on them.
