Enable the "Import Inseparable Assemblies" for Creo Elements/Direct Modeling

Enable the "Import Inseparable Assemblies" for Creo Elements/Direct Modeling

The customers that are using Creo Elements/Direct Modeling are all using Inseperable Assemblies. This feature is supported in a standalone session or a linked session to Windchill. This function exists already a long time.

Since Creo 8.0 this is also available, which is a great enhancement.

PTC forgot to add the functionality for Creo Elements/Direct Modeling, which is unacceptable as Creo Parametric & Creo Elements/Direct Modeling are both products from PTC. This should be supported in a first place.

For NX, Solidworks, Catia and Inventor it is possible, but not for the product they deliver.

Please add also this functionality to Creo Parametric as this is for NX, SolidWorks, ...

Thank you for publishing your idea. However, we need more information as specified in the form you saw in the submission process. (questions below). The more details and context you give to document your idea, the better. Think about ways to educate and convince other Community members to support your idea and present your case to the product management team for consideration.

Please let us know within the next two weeks.

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.
2. What product & version are you currently running?
3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.
4. What is the use case for your organization?
5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

Additionally, I invite you to check out this topic where 2 PTC executives explain product managers' approach to customer ideas and input for product roadmaps.

Hello  ,

Thanks for looking to this idea. See below the answer to all the questions you have:

1. Describe your environment: What is your industry? What is your role in your organization? Describe your stakeholders.

We as Savaco are a PTC Reseller from Belgium. We implement, configure and install all the PTC PLM/PDM/CAD systems. In Savaco i'm an Application Engineer in CAD & PLM. This means i'm busy with everything regarding Creo Parametric, Creo Elements/Direct and Windchill. So this can be a migration from Creo Elements/Direct to Creo Parametric or installing Windchill.  We always work by order of our customers.

This means we have to achieve togheter with our CAD & PLM/PDM customer' the goals they want to achieve and do this with an impact so the customer is satisfied with the chosen solution.

2.What product & version are you currently running?

As reseller we are running multiple product, for example: Creo Parametric, Creo Elements/Direct, Windchill ,... The versions are always the latest version for testing issues or the version the customer is working in

3. Describe the problem you are trying to solve. Please include detailed documentation such as screenshots, images or video.

We have several customers that are planning to move from Creo Elements/Direct Modeling to Creo Parametric. This move is because Creo Elements/Direct Modeling does not meet the customers goals anymore. All the new features are implemented in Creo Parametric and just a very small implementation in Creo Elements/Direct Modeling. The customers see that also, all the newest features are available in Creo Parametric, but the software they are running does not evolve anymore.

The customers are now looking to move to Creo Parametric. This should be the best way opposite to other CAD systems as NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, ... as PTC delivers both software (Creo Elements/Direct Modeling and Creo Parametric). We have some issues regarding this conversion. One of the major conversion issues is the import of Inseparable Assemblies. This is functionality who is available for all the time Creo Elements/Direct users are working. Now from Creo 8.0 this is also available in Creo Parametric which is a good enhancement.

As this is available in both product, you should expect that this works in an import but this is not possible. See below:

This is tested on Creo Parametric 9.0 and 8.0.

4. What is the use case for your organization?

The use case is to convert models/assemblies from Creo Elements/Direct Modeling to Creo Parametric. This could deliver a opportunity for PTC. Many customers that are using Creo Elements/Direct Modeling are looking to go to Creo Parametric for newer functionality.

5. What business value would your suggestion represent for your organization?

If the import is so fluent as possible, the customers does not need to do manual actions. So if the Inseparable assemblies are recognized by the system, the users don’t need to this manually. In fact this is also not seen by a designer. No parameters are set that this is Inseparable Assembly.

This will lead to many errors to the system. For example:

We made in Creo Elements/Direct Modeling an Inseparable assembly from a Festo Cylinder. When importing this into Creo Parametric, this is a full assembly. When this goes to Windchill, all the separate parts will get an Article and when release this to ERP, this would cause an order of all the separate parts.

If this happens, the customer doesn’t order a Cylinder, but a Cylinder with all the parts also.
